Arduino May be the Answer!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Put their techno-obsession to good use&#8230; get them an Arduino!<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Do you have a child who is addicted to gaming? <\/strong>(Minecraft? Halo? &#8211; the list could go on forever) <strong>Or maybe an engineer in the making? <\/strong> Well, I do and sometimes it drives me nuts because I feel his time is being wasted on &#8220;GAMES.&#8221; <strong>It occurred to me that part of the obsession with technology isn&#8217;t necessarily bad.<\/strong> Technology is here to stay (especially in the workplace) and there are some products available that can actually help your technology-obsessed child&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<h3>Case in point: The Arduino!<\/h3>\n<p><strong>What the heck is an Arduino? <\/strong> In layperson&#8217;s terms it&#8217;s an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B006H06TVG\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B006H06TVG&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=daveworkswebd-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inexpensive piece of hardware<\/a><img class=\"lazyload\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%271%27%20height%3D%271%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%201%201%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%271%27%20height%3D%271%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-orig-src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=daveworkswebd-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B006H06TVG\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\nthat can be programmed and wired to make things work. Examples: robots, remote helicopters and cars. What&#8217;s also important to know is that <em>this little piece of hardware can also be used for very sophisticated applications<\/em> like home automation, artificial limbs, energy monitors, hydroponics, motion control photography. I even built an <a title=\"El Pollo Palace \u2013 My Arduino Automated, Energy Efficient Chicken Coop\" href=\"https:\/\/davenaves.com\/blog\/blog\/automatic-chicken-door\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">automated chicken coop<\/a> (heating, lighting, auto-door, motion detector, to name a few functions) =)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Arduino, in geek-speak:<\/strong><br \/>\nARDUINO IS AN OPEN-SOURCE ELECTRONICS PROTOTYPING PLATFORM BASED ON FLEXIBLE, EASY-TO-USE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE. IT&#8217;S INTENDED FOR ARTISTS, DESIGNERS, HOBBYISTS AND ANYONE INTERESTED IN CREATING INTERACTIVE OBJECTS OR ENVIRONMENTS. (cite: arduino.cc)<\/p>\n<p>Your child can learn about electronics, coding, engineering, construction&#8230; countless valuable skills. The only limitation will be their imaginations.<\/p>\n<h3>Even MIT is hyped on the Arduino!<\/h3>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U2fUvCFNyI0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Why the Arduino would be a good use of your child&#8217;s time and why they would actually want to learn &amp; play with it<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s technical and at the same time, fun, creative and easy<\/li>\n<li>They can do it with their friends<\/li>\n<li>They can build countless numbers of projects<\/li>\n<li>They can actually learn and create things of value<\/li>\n<li>The skills learned can most definitely translate into careers (The Arduino language (based on Wiring) is implemented in C\/C++, and therefore has some differences from the Processing language, which is based on Java)<\/li>\n<li>Families can do projects together<\/li>\n<li>MANY people around the world are already creating and sharing project ideas and code (including VERY smart engineers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What exactly is needed to get started with Arduino?<\/h3>\n<p>While there are many components you can buy separately, I found it easier and cheaper to buy a whole <a title=\"Arduino Starter Kit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B009UKZV0A\/ref=as_li_tf_il?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B009UKZV0A&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=daveworkswebd-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">starter kit<\/a>.
